Reverse circulation drilling or RC drilling is a drilling method that uses a double walled drill pipe consisting of an outer drill pipe and an inner pipe. These hollow inner tubes allow rock debris to flow continuously and stably back to the ground. Unlike the rope coring method, RC drilling obtains rock debris samples rather than core samples. The drilling principle is to use a pneumatic down the hole hammer to drive a tungsten steel drill bit to break rock layers, which is used to break hard rocks. When compressed air is blown out, pressure deviation will generate reverse circulation, causing rock debris to enter the inner pipe upwards. When the rock debris reaches the ground, it is connected to the cyclone through a hose for sample separation, and then the sample falls into the sample bag from the bottom opening. These sample bags are labeled with the location and depth of the collected samples and can be directly transported to the laboratory for analysis.
RC drilling can extract stable, reliable, and pollution-free samples. Rock debris enters the cyclone through the inner pipe of the drill rod without touching other areas, thus avoiding cross contamination and obtaining high-quality, reliable samples. The samples are easy to classify and track, with precise location and depth, and can accurately locate the mineralization location. It can drill 100-300m per day, which can obtain drilling results faster and take less time. RC drilling does not require water during the drilling process, making it suitable for drilling in water scarce areas.
